The Digital Pulse: What It Actually Tells You (and What It Doesn’t)

As we move into spring weather, many owners start checking digital pulses more often. It’s a useful habit, but only if you understand what the pulse is actually showing you. A stronger pulse doesn’t automatically mean laminitis, and a quiet pulse doesn’t guarantee safety. The digital pulse is simply a reflection of blood flow through the hoof’s vasculature, and circulation can change for many reasons. It's important to consider a digital pulse in the context of a range of symptoms.

The hoof is not a solid block. It’s a living structure filled with blood vessels that expand and contract constantly. Two arteries - the medial and lateral palmar digital arteries - run down either side of the pastern and feed the entire foot. They branch into a dense network of vessels inside the hoof capsule, supplying the laminae, the sole corium, the frog, and the digital cushion. Every step a horse takes compresses and releases these structures, pushing blood through the foot like a pump. This is why movement is so important for hoof health: circulation depends on it.
When the weather turns warm and wet, the horse’s circulatory system shifts. Blood flow to the skin and extremities increases because the horse is trying to regulate temperature and humidity. Warm rain, rising moisture, and mild nights all encourage vasodilation (the widening of blood vessels). When vessels widen, more blood moves through them, and the pulse becomes easier to feel. This is a normal physiological response, not always a sign of disease.

A stronger digital pulse becomes meaningful only when it appears alongside other changes. A warm hoof paired with a stronger pulse tells you that circulation has increased, but it doesn’t tell you why. A stronger pulse paired with tentative steps on firm ground is more concerning, because it suggests the laminae are under strain. A stronger pulse paired with reluctance to turn is a red flag. The pulse is never the story on its own; it is part of a pattern.
Inside the hoof, the laminae are richly supplied with blood. When they become inflamed, the vessels within them swell. This swelling increases pressure inside the hoof capsule, and the pulse becomes more prominent. But inflammation isn’t the only reason vessels swell. Warm weather, sudden rain, and rapid grass growth all change the horse’s metabolic load. After rain, grass produces more non‑structural carbohydrates, and horses with insulin resistance or PPID may experience subtle shifts in comfort long before any dramatic signs appear. In these horses, a stronger pulse can be an early clue that the metabolic system is under strain. It’s not a reason to panic; it’s a reason to pay attention, and adjust your husbandry accordingly.
The digital pulse also reflects how much pressure the hoof is experiencing. If the horse has been standing still for long periods, blood pools slightly in the extremities, making the pulse easier to feel. If the horse has been moving freely, the hoof’s internal pump system keeps circulation more even. This is why you may feel a stronger pulse first thing in the morning or after a long spell of rain when horses are less active.
What is a normal digital pulse?
A normal digital pulse in a horse is soft, faint, and sometimes difficult to find. When you place your fingers lightly over the digital artery at the fetlock or pastern, you should feel:
a gentle tap,
with low amplitude,
that does not push back strongly against your fingers.
In many horses, especially those who are moving regularly, metabolically stable, and on low‑sugar pasture, the pulse can be so subtle that you have to adjust your fingers several times to locate it.
What “bounding pulses” means in horses
A bounding digital pulse is a pulse that feels stronger, fuller, and more forceful than normal when you place your fingers over the digital arteries at the fetlock or pastern. Instead of a faint, soft “tap,” you feel a distinct, rhythmic push of blood. Veterinarians use the term 'bounding' because the pulse has more amplitude.
Why a pulse becomes bounding
A bounding pulse means blood is meeting resistance inside the hoof’s vasculature. That resistance can come from:
1. Inflammation inside the hoof capsule
Inflamed laminae swell, narrowing the tiny vessels inside the hoof. Blood has to push harder to get through, so the pulse becomes stronger. This is why a bounding pulse is one of the earliest signs of laminitis.
2. Increased blood flow (vasodilation)
More blood moves to the extremities to help regulate temperature. This can make the pulse easier to feel even in a sound horse.
3. Increased pressure from metabolic load
High‑sugar pasture, insulin spikes, or PPID can increase vascular pressure inside the hoof. The pulse strengthens because the laminar tissues are under strain.
4. Reduced movement
Standing still for long periods (common in heavy rain) allows blood to pool slightly in the extremities, making the pulse more prominent

Step back and look at the whole picture: movement, stance, hoof temperature, pasture conditions, and the horse’s metabolic history. The pulse is one piece of a much larger puzzle. Your job is simply to notice the pattern, not to panic at the first sign.
